REVIEW

In his own résumé of this his third album, Rob states that it is not a love album just one in which he wants you to “chill out”, “lose yourself and take life less seriously”.

Ballads by their very definition tell stories “a narrative song with a recurrent refrain – a slow, sentimental song” [Collins English Dictionary]. This collection of thirteen ballads do indeed tell a story. The three taken from Rob’s first album all speak of lost love and having to say good-bye. The five taken from ‘Playboyeurism’ speak of a dwindling relationship and what needs to be done to rekindle the dying flames. The five new songs, however, are far more positive in outlook – they portray a strong person, someone who knows the good and bad aspects of their relationships and someone who knows what is needed for things to work out – ultimately someone who accepts life as it is and makes the most of it. The ‘recurrent refrain’ of the ballads is indeed the perseverance and the moving forwards that remains the leit-motif of all of Rob’s work.

Despite Rob’s claim, love does then constitute the main theme of these songs – would they be ballads if this were not the case? However, the overall sentiment is indeed one of taking things easy and enjoying life. Within these songs there is dance “to ask you on the floor to dance”, there is romantic involvement “together make love by candlelight”, there are many walks “walk in pastures dear to me”, “Can I walk with you through the park tonight?”, we experience exotic travel “living on an island in a different world,” there are dreams “in a world where dreams come true,” and there is merriment “in a time with only laughter”. The overall message is given to us in the line “keep a smile and learn to live”. Herein lies the essential difference between this latest album and its two predecessors – whilst they challenged us by asking many, often un-resolvable questions, this album calms us by offering some answers and relaxes us by telling us to go out there and enjoy what life has to offer. How can we refuse when we see the inviting photos which span the four seasons and take us to woodland, snow-covered mountains, countryside and sandy shores?

The songs, like all successful ballads, entice you to join in with their lyrical melodies, their swaying rhythms and their relaxing tones. Let’s take the advice given in ‘Who I am’ and let us “always walk the road ahead wearing a smile for all around”.
